Le Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB)

The Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) is a private association with a public interest. It is under the responsibility of the French Ministère de l'Agriculture (Ministry of Agricultural Affairs) and is subject to financial control by the State.

Advance knowledge in the collective interest of the wines of Bordeaux.

Answer all the qualitative question of its members, but also those from buyers and consumers.

Anticipate new environmental or safety requirements; conserve and protect Bordeaux's wine growing heritage.

The CIVB budget originates from dues paid by the 1,200 vinegrowers and 400 négociants that it represents. The president is elected for two years, alternately representing the vinegrowers or the négociants.

The CIVB has several missions:

Promotional: The CIVB must promote the interests of its members on a national and international scale via publicity campaigns (billboards, written press and television), promotional activities (in cafes, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets), as well as public and press relations.

Economic: The CIVB is also charged with acquiring and improving market knowledge, from production to sales opportunities. The CIVB’s Economic Study department establishes internal statistics (follow-up on commercialization) and collects other statistics (ex. exports, harvest, etc.). This research is completed by data from specially commissioned panels or studies (consumption, distribution, awareness and image of Bordeaux wines), taking into account the competitive and socio-cultural environment.

This vast spectrum of information is shared with concerned professionals through documents as well as during regular meetings and conferences.
